Navy
AC and Coronado Aquatics Crowned National Champions!
After three days of competition, the Navy Aquatic
Club (Annapolis, MD) and the Coronado Aquatics Club (Coronado, CA) became
National Champions.
In the Boy's Division, Navy's quest for the title
began by defeating Pennsylvania's Kingfish 16-8, Virginia's Claude Moore
14-3, and Illinois' Windy City 18-9, before taking on California's Coronado
in the championship.
Navy jumped out to a quick start during the title
game and never relinquished the lead, cruising to a 18-10 victory and
winning their first National State Challenge Championship. Sam Butler
(Navy AC) was named the MVP of the tournament and Randal Burgess (Coronado)
the top coach.
In the girls division, Coronado fared much better,
edging a tough Greenwich squad 10-8. On their way to the championship
game they easily handled Virginia's Claude Moore 26-6, Pennsylvania's
Kingfish 15-5, and Illinois' Windy City 13-5 before meeting Greenwich
in the final contest.
The game against Greenwich was a great one, with
teams changing leads and some incredible shots by athletes on both squads.
In the end it was a matter of attrition, as Greenwich lost too many
players due to fouls and Coronado was able to hang on for the win, earning
their first National State Challenge title. Kelly Ronimus (Coronado)
was named Player of the Tournament and Dave Throop (Coronado) the Coach
of the Championship.
The victories earn each team $1,000 for their programs.
