GREATER SAN DIEGO ESCAPES NAVY-ANNAPOLIS VIA 8-7 FINAL SCORE

CORONADO, Calif. – David Owens converted on a man-up chance with 3:00 left in the fourth period for the deciding factor as Greater San Diego held off a surge by Navy-Annapolis down the stretch to hang on for an 8-7 victory in the boys' 18-and-under division at the 2010 National State Challenge.

Leading 6-3 with 1:14 remaining in the third period, San Diego saw its' lead begin to evaporate as Ridge Porter added his second score of the period with 58 seconds remaining in the frame to move Annapolis to within 6-4.

The margin continued to dwindle as Porter fired hom his third goal of the second half to make it 6-5 and set Navy up to knot the game. However, Chris Ankeney stopped the bleeding for San Diego with a natural goal at 4:03 to hand GSD a 7-5 lead.

Following Owens' eventual game-winner, Navy attempted to rally back as Konrad Karandy scored at even-strength (1:08) and connected on a penalty shot (00:55) to move Annapolis within a goal with less than a minute to play.

However, the San Diego defense stiffened and held off any further challenges to hang on for the one-goal victory.
