GREATER PHILADELPHIA EDGES WINDY CITY 6-4 CORONADO, Calif. – Kelsey Tarzia scored twice in the fourth period to account for the difference as Greater Philadelphia edged Windy City 6-4 in the girls' 18-and-under bracket at the 2010 National State Challenge. The contest's beginning and end were radically different as Windy City ran out to a 3-0 lead in the first period with goals by Erin McDonald (3:55), Gena Wendt (1:30) and Nora Sweeney (00:08). Greater Philadelphia began to climb back into the game in the second period courtesy Windy City mistakes as Philly scored on man-up chances at 4:42 and 2:45 to trim the deficit to 3-2 by halftime. The score was evened at 3-3 with 4:28 left in the third period as Jade Lawson rifled in a shot. Windy City retook the lead nearly three minutes later as a shot by Maggie Carey eluded Greater Philly goalie Rebecca Mount at the 1:43 mark to put the Second City residents in front 4-3. Windy City's lead was short-lived as Kathryn Jacobson heaved home her only tally of the contest with 34 seconds left in the third period to tie the score and set-up Tarzia's heroics in the fourth period. In a back-and-forth period of play, neither team could break the stalemate until Tarzia ripped a shot into the twine on a man-up chance at 3:52 for the eventual game-winner. She tacked on an insurance goal 56 seconds later with an even-strength tally with 2:56 to play as Greater Philly held on for the win.
