GREATER SAN DIEGO CAPTURES FIFTH PLACE IN GIRLS' NATIONAL STATE CHALLENGE BRACKET CORONADO, Calif. – Anique Hermann scored three goals, including the game-winner with 54 seconds remaining in the fourth period, to account for all of her team's scoring as Greater San Diego downed Windy City 3-2 for fifth place in the girls' 18-and-under bracket at the National State Challenge. Greater San Diego never trailed as Hermann scored at 3:49 of the first period and connected on a penalty shot at 1:36 of the second period to give her team a 2-0 lead at halftime. Alexa Ovalle finished on a man-up chance at 4:37 of the third period to move Windy City within a goal at 2-1 before Gena Wendt zipped a shot into the cage at 1:21 of the fourth period to tie the game. Hermann closed out the game by working her way through the Windy City defense and uncorking a shot which sailed past her defender and the goalie for the game-winning score with under a minute to play. |
