NAVY-ANNAPOLIS CAPTURES FIFTH PLACE IN BOYS' NATIONAL STATE CHALLENGE BRACKET CORONADO, Calif. – Konrad Karandy scored at 1:10 of the first overtime period for the eventual game-winner and Ridge Porter added an insurace goal with 2:04 remaining in the second three-minute OT period to lead Navy-Annapolis to a 7-5 OT win over Pittsburgh and fifth place in the boys' 18-and-under division at the National State Challenge. Porter's goal, which gave Annapolis a 7-5 lead, marked the first time that either team led by more than one tally in the contest. Annapolis opened the scoring with 35 second left in the first period before Pittsburgh tied the game 15 seconds later on a successful penalty shot by Zach Presto. Navy regained the lead with 17 seconds remaining in the second period as Karandy connected on a five-meter penalty shot, but Pittsburgh came right back to tie the game seven seconds later on an even-strength bomb by Presto to set the game at 2-2 entering halftime. The teams continued to trade goals in the third and fourth periods. In the third, Porter scored at 3:09 and Presto answered with a penalty shot at 2:54 to complete a hat-trick to keep the game tied at 3-3. Following a strike by Pitt's Evan Staresinic with 1:29 on the clock to hand the Tigers their first lead of the game, Navy's Peter Doetsch evened the damage at 4-all with 11 seconds left in the period. The fourth period started with another Pitt lead as Mike Magdic converted on a man-up chance with 3:15 remaining in regulation, but Doetsch answered for Navy with an even-strength marker with 1:45 on the clock to bring on overtime.
