WINDY CITY BLOWS AWAY GREATER SAN DIEGO 6-4 CORONADO, Calif. – Windy City received three goals from Annie Collins to outlast Greater San Diego 6-4 in the girls' 18-and-under division at the 2010 National State Challenge hosted by American Water Polo at the Brian Bent Aquatic Complex. The victory places Windy City into a 5:00 p.m. match-up against Coronado at 5:00 p.m. with a berth in the fifth place game on the line. Greater San DIego will take on North Beach at 6:00 p.m. with the other berth in the fifth place game at stake. Following a scoreless first period, Greater San Diego jumped on the board first with a tally by Anique Hermann at the 4:31 mark. However, Windy City's offense kicked up as Annie Collins fired in shots at 2:34 and the halftime buzer, while Gena Wendt added tallies at 1:18 and 00:44 for a 4-1 lead at the break. Greater San Diego rallied back with a strike by Vanessa de los Reyes at 1:59 of the third period and a marker by Hermann at 3:11 of the fourth period to pull within 4-3. However, Maggie Carey cushioned the lead to 5-3 at 1:45 with a goal before Lacy Hamrick responded with 55 seconds to play to move Greater San Diego back to within a goal at 5-4. Needing a stop and a goal to force overtime, San Diego's comeback dreams were shattered by the Windy City defense and a score by Collins with two seconds on the clock for the 6-4 final score.
