HAWAII-IOLANI STOPS GREATER SAN DIEGO 9-2

CORONADO, Calif. – Hawaii-Iolani used consistent scoring to post one goal in the first period, four in the second, and pairs in the third and fourth periods to handle Greater San Diego in the boys' 18-and-under division at the National State Challenge sponsored by American Water Polo at the Brian Bent Memorial Aquatics Complex at Coronado High School.

The victory places Bracket B champion Iolani into a semifinal match-up against Bracket A runner-up Greater Philadelphia at 4:00 p.m., while Bracket B runner-up Greater San Diego will appear in a 3:00 p.m. semifinal against Bracket A champion Navy-AC.

A key to the game for Iolani was getting out of the starting gates quick posting a marker by Tom Hartwell at the 4:27 mark of the first period. After being kept off the board for the remainder of the period, the Hawaiians exploded for four more goals in the second period to carry a 5-0 lead into halftime.

The deficit was too much for Greater San Diego to overcome as they could pull no closer than 5-1 before Hawaii tacked on two more scores to take a 7-1 lead in the third period on the way to a seven goal victory.

For Iolani, Chris Nichols led the way with four goals while Hartwell added a hat-trick.
